Crayfish are actually freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, to which they are closely related. They are found in streams and lakes of fresh water that do not freeze to the bottom, which are not polluted, and which have shelter against predators. The Red claw can be found in nature in rivers and lakes of northern Australia.
Red-Claw inhabit permanent fresh water to a depth of 5 meters and are abundant in the headwaters sections of rivers. They can live in a variety of habitats, from shallow, clear, fast flowing creeks to the deep, still water. Red-Claw prefer sites with abundant aquatic vegetation that provides cover. They leave the water regularly and can exist in stagnant or poor quality waters.
Red-Claw are a moderately large freshwater crayfish. They have a smooth body, which is in blue-green color. The adult males have a distinct red patch on the outer margin of the claws. They can reach up to 300 g.
